Subway: home schooled kids need not apply

Onlinehomeschooling Michelle Malkin reports that Subway Sandwich Shop is holding a story-writing contest for kids, but they're excluding home schooled kids from participating. It's shocking, really, like Subway thinks kids who are home schooled are second class students.  Home Education Magazine has the story and outlines for us exactly who is acceptable to Subway. And note the typo:

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied (sic) States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.  [emphasis mine]

First, the folks at Subway need to learn how to spell United States for crying out loud. Second, this decision is going to come back and bite Subway in rear end because, obviously, their marketing gurus haven't heard about the power of mommy bloggers, many of whom home school their children! Does Subway really want to be on the receiving end of mommy bloggers' wrath the way Johnson & Johnson was? Brilliant, Subway. Just brilliant.

How infuriating! But you know, they probably just know that home schooled kids have an unfair advantage over the public school competition. Lol. Boycott, anyone?

I have to admit that when I first saw this I thought the same thing Alicia mentioned! LOL But, seriously, as a second generation homeschooler, this doesn't surprise me a bit. I am all for a boycott!

Kim, we had lunch at Subway today. Biting into a seriously undercooked chunk of chicken in my chicken teriyaki sandwich grossed me out enough to have cooled my ardor for Subway, but this moves me down a few more notches toward positively cured of Subway. Thanks for sharing this. BTW, I sent them an e-mail and included my graduate credentials as well as my ten years college-level teaching experience. I'm rather sure that my second grader is at least as well educated as the child of the PR ninny who made this decision. . .

You need to get out more!
